  1. (1941-2006) a US singer and writer of songs, mostly of soul music. They include In the Midnight Hour (1965), Mustang Sally (1966) and Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You (1971). He was chosen for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and that year appeared in the film The Commitments. He continued to perform on tour until 2004.
