  1. a northern US state which has borders with Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Its popular name is the Badger State. The largest city is Milwaukee and the capital city is Madison. The US won the land from Britain in the American Revolution, but the British did not leave until after the War of 1812. Wisconsin became a state in 1848. Its farm products include cheese, milk and corn, and it also produces paper, beer, cars and machinery. The state has more than 14 000 lakes, many of which are popular with tourists.
