  1. the title of three US films about an old actor who helps a young woman with her career, marries her and then kills himself. The best-known version (1954) was a musical with Judy Garland and James Mason. It was made again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, and its song Evergreen won an Oscar. The first version of the film was made in 1937.
