  1. a small eastern state in the US, named after an Algonquian tribe that was one of its native peoples. Its capital city is Dover and its largest city is Wilmington. The northern part of the state is industrial, with a large chemical industry, and the southern part agricultural. Delaware was one of the original thirteen colonies and is sometimes called the First State because it was the first to accept the US Constitution.
