- (1904-97) a US artist, born in the Netherlands. He went to the US in 1926 and soon became a leader in the abstract expressionism movement. He painted large pictures with bright colours and great energy. He was also interested in painting the human form, as in his series Woman I–V (1952-3). see also action painting
