  1. (1919-1972) a US baseball player, the first African American in either of the two US major leagues (= associations of teams). He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947-56) and was Most Valuable Player for the National League in 1949. In 1962 he was chosen for the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
