Leopold Stokowski

- (1887-1977) a US conductor born in England who did a lot to make classical music more popular in America. He was known for his dramatic style. He directed the Philadelphia Orchestra (1912-36) and they played the music for the Walt Disney film Fantasia. Stokowski established the American Symphony Orchestra in 1962.
