  1. (1925-2008) a US actor who also produced and directed films. He is perhaps best remembered for his part in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). His other films include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), The Hustler (1961), Cool Hand Luke (1967), The Sting (1973), Nobody's Fool (1994) and The Road to Perdition (2002). He received a special Oscar in 1985 and an Oscar for The Color of Money (1986). Newman was married to the actor Joanne Woodward, with whom he often appeared in films. He was also a NASCAR racing driver and he owned a food company called Newman's Own, whose profits are given to charity.
