- the main female character in the novel Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Scarlett is a lively woman who uses her charm to get what she wants. She loves Ashley Wilkes, who rejects her because he is already married, so she marries the charming but immoral Rhett Butler, who finally leaves her. In the 1939 film version of the book, Scarlett was played by the English actor Vivien Leigh.
