- Thomas Wolsey (c. 1474-1530) an English cardinal (= a senior Roman Catholic priest), who was Henry VIII's most important political adviser in the first half of his reign . Wolsey became very powerful, but was dismissed by Henry when he failed to get the Pope's permission for the king to divorce Catherine of Aragon.
