  1. (1908-91) an English film director. His early films included Brief Encounter (1946) and the Dickens stories Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948). Lean's later films were on a larger scale, including The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Dr Zhivago (1965) and A Passage to India (1984). He was made a knight in 1984.
