  1. a desert covering part of the US states of California and Nevada. It is the lowest land in the western hemisphere, being 282 feet/86 metres below sea level, with very high temperatures (up to 50° Celsius). The desert was a source of the mineral borax in the late 19th century. In 1933, the area became the Death Valley National monument.
