  1. a state in the western US, sometimes called the Silver State because of the large amounts of silver that were discovered there in the 19th century. It consists mostly of desert and mountains. Its capital is Carson City and the largest city is Las Vegas. Las Vegas and Reno are popular tourist destinations, especially for gambling. Other tourist attractions include Lake Tahoe and the Hoover Dam. In the past, Nevada had less strict marriage laws than other states and people travelled to its cities in order to get divorced quickly. The state produces many minerals, including silver, gold and copper. Its most important agricultural product is cattle.
