- (1943-70) a US singer popular in the 1960s, especially with hippies. Her voice was harsh, and she was known for her wild performances on stage. Her best-known songs include Piece of My Heart (1968), Try (1969) and Me and Bobby McGee (1971). She was chosen for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
