  1. an agricultural community in Guyana established in 1977 for a US religious group called the People's Temple of the Disciples of Christ by its leader Jim Jones (1931-78). After US Congressman Leo Ryan and four people with him were murdered while visiting Jonestown in 1978, Jones ordered the members of his community to kill themselves with a drink that contained poison. All 913 died, including more than 240 children, and Jones shot himself.
