- a town in north-east England where the shipbuilding and steel industries were badly affected by the Depression in the 1930s, making many workers unemployed. In 1936 about 200 unemployed workers walked 274 miles/441 kilometres from Jarrow to London on a ‘ hunger march ’ in an attempt to persuade the government to do something about the problem. see also Bede
