  1. (1885-1945) a US writer of many popular songs, especially for Broadway musical shows and Hollywood films. His best-known show was Show Boat, which included the song Ol' Man River. Kern won an Oscar for the song The Last Time I Saw Paris in the film Lady Be Good (1941). His other songs include Look for the Silver Lining (1920) and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (1933). Ira Gershwin and Oscar Hammerstein were among the many people who wrote the words for Kern's songs. see also George Gershwin
