  1. a famous Broadway musical play (1927) by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein. It was based on a novel (1926) by Edna Ferber about people on the Cotton Blossom, a showboat on the Mississippi River. It includes the songs Ol' Man River and Only Make Believe. There have been three film versions (1929, 1936 and 1951).
