  1. (1820-1914) an English artist and cartoonist, best known for his illustrations of Lewis Carroll's books Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. These still appear in versions of the books produced today and most people associate them closely with the original stories. Tenniel was also for many years a political cartoonist for the magazine Punch. He was made a knight in 1893.
