  1. a south-eastern US state, also called the Volunteer State. It became a state in 1796 and later joined the Confederate States. Many Civil War battles were fought there. The largest city is Memphis and the capital city is Nashville. Tourist attractions include the Great Smoky Mountains, Graceland and the Grand Ole Opry.
