  1. (1888-1969) the father of US President John F Kennedy. He was a rich businessman who became head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (1934-5) and later the US Ambassador to Britain (1937-40). He and his wife Rose had nine children. The oldest son, Joe, was killed in the Second World War, and Kennedy successfully encouraged his other sons (John, Robert and Edward) to become politicians.
