  1. (1919-2009) a Scottish television presenter and author. In the 1960s he presented a number of news and current affairs programmes, including Panorama and This Week. He was well known for investigating the cases of people thought to have been wrongly put in prison, and also for his support for euthanasia (= allowing people the right to die when they want to do so because of serious illness, etc.). He was made a knight in 1994.
