  1. (1888-1982) a British ballet dancer and director, born in Poland. After dancing with Sergei Diaghilev's company (1912-13) she opened a ballet school in London (1920) which developed into the dance company now known as Rambert. She was made a dame in 1962. see also Frederick Ashton
