- Richard Joseph Daley (1902-76) the mayor of Chicago from 1955 to 1976, well known for his strong methods. In 1968 he ordered the Chicago police to attack a group of demonstrators (= people taking part in a public protest) and this was embarrassing to the Democratic Party which was meeting there to choose a candidate for President.
