  1. (1905-89) a US writer who was the country's first Poet Laureate and the only American to receive the Pulitzer Prize for both fiction and poetry. He wrote mostly about the South. His Pulitzer Prizes were for the novel All the King's Men (1946) and his poetry collections Promises (1957) and Now and Then (1979). Warren was also a well-known critic
