Roswell
/ˈrɒzwel/
/ˈrɑːzwel/
- a city in New Mexico which is best known for an incident which happened there in 1947, when something crashed on farmland. At first, people said it was a UFO, but the US military later said that it was a weather balloon (= a piece of equipment used for measuring weather conditions). Many people have claimed that the truth is that it was a 'flying disk' containing an alien body as the first reports stated. They believe that the authorities are trying to hide the truth. The incident has become the subject of a number of investigations, books, films and a television series, and the area has become popular with tourists.
