  1. a battle (1651) in which Charles II was defeated by Oliver Cromwell. Charles was trying to establish himself as the king of England after the execution of his father Charles I. His attempt failed and the Commonwealth, led by Cromwell, continued. Charles escaped by hiding in a tree when the battle was lost.
