  1. (in Britain) an important official who examines complaints from members of the public about central government departments, certain government organizations and the National Health Service. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman is independent of government and has the right to look at any documents or ask any government employee questions. They can order the government to pay money to the person making the complaint, or to put things right in some other way. Separate ombudsmen have been established for Scotland and Wales.
