[singular] (British English)- the name given to a number of fashionable sports and cultural events held every summer in Britain and attended by many rich, famous or upper-class people. The events include among others Glyndebourne, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal Ascot, Wimbledon tennis championships, Henley Royal Regatta, the horse races at Goodwood House, Cowes Week and the Lord's test match (= international cricket match). Members of the royal family attend some of the events, and tickets are often expensive and difficult to get.
